Mediobanca Declines Monte dei Paschi's Takeover Proposal

MILAN (AP) -- In a notable development within the Italian banking sector, Mediobanca has dismissed a surprise acquisition attempt by fellow Italian institution Monte dei Paschi di Siena. According to an article on Yahoo Finance, Mediobanca declared the takeover bid to be "devoid of industrial and financial rationale."

Last week, Monte dei Paschi, the oldest bank in Italy, made a bold move with a €13.3 billion ($13.9 billion) buyout offer for the larger Milan-based Mediobanca. This proposal was aimed at transforming the landscape of the Italian banking industry, with projected annual pretax synergies of €700 million ($733 million).
