Mereo Advisors Secures $700 Million for Reinsurance Operations

Mereo Advisors, chaired by former American International Group Inc. CEO Brian Duperreault, has raised more than $700 million to kickstart its reinsurance business. According to Bloomberg, the company has attracted commitments from notable investors like Ares Management Corp., Susquehanna International Group, and Andover Cos. Although the company will continue to accept further equity commitments until the end of March, the preliminary funding begins a promising venture into reinsurance.

The company's strategic entry comes amidst a backdrop of increasing catastrophe losses and escalating litigation-related liabilities, which signal a favorable market environment for new entrants. The recent wildfires in Los Angeles, which might result in insured losses as high as $40 billion, highlight the pressing demand for reinsurance solutions that Mereo can provide.

Mereo Insurance Limited, the reinsurance unit, has obtained full regulatory approval from the Bermuda Monetary Authority and an A- rating from AM Best. Duperreault mentioned that the unit is set to underwrite up to $520 million during its first year, diversifying across specialty and property-casualty lines of business. The firm aims to maintain a balanced portfolio that encompasses approximately 25 lines of business on a risk-weighted basis.

Complementing its reinsurance operations, Mereo operates an open-ended insurance-linked securities vehicle, Mereo ILS Opportunities Fund, which has already allocated about $250 million in the latest January 1 renewals across reinsurance and retrocession markets. This approach allows Mereo to manage risks efficiently by spreading them further among other reinsurers.

Alongside Duperreault, who serves as the chairman, the leadership at Mereo Advisors includes former Aegis London CEO David Croom-Johnson and Lawrence Minicone. Croom-Johnson will head the reinsurance unit, while Minicone will serve as the chief investment officer, guiding Mereo's strategic growth in this lucrative domain.
