Meta Gears Up for Massive AI Investment After Revenue Surge

Meta Platforms, Inc. is set to release its eagerly awaited fourth-quarter earnings results after markets close on Wednesday. This follows a notable 1.7% rise in their stock price, which closed at $11.04 per share on Friday. According to analysts, Meta is expected to report robust revenues of $47 billion for the quarter, with net income predicted at $23.3 billion, translating to earnings per share of $6.75.

In a recent announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled ambitious plans to funnel between $60 billion and $65 billion into capital expenditures focusing on AI development in 2025. This investment aims to position Meta AI as the leading AI assistant, serving over a billion users, and foreseeably elevating Meta's Llama 4 model to state-of-the-art status by the year's end.

To facilitate this expansion, Meta is constructing a new data center with a capacity exceeding two gigawatts, enough to cover a significant part of Manhattan. This facility is expected to bring one gigawatt of compute power online by 2025, with an infrastructure featuring over 1.3 million GPUs by the conclusion of the year, as detailed by Zuckerberg. Furthermore, Meta plans to bolster its AI teams with significant workforce expansions.

However, in a shift towards efficiency, Meta has indicated a 5% reduction in workforce, affecting around 3,600 jobs, targeting what has been described internally as "low-performers." These cuts were outlined in an internal message from Zuckerberg to managers, emphasizing the shift towards more performance-based assessments.

In parallel with these developments, Zuckerberg has also introduced several strategic policy changes within the company, including scaling back on content moderation and eliminating their fact-checking systems. This policy shift comes amid closer ties with the Trump administration, signaling potential strategic realignments at the social media conglomerate.
