Meta Platforms Announces Imminent Layoffs Amid Strategic Shift

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has confirmed that it will proceed with company-wide layoffs next week, while simultaneously accelerating its recruitment drive for machine learning engineers. The layoffs will begin at 5 a.m. local time on Monday in most countries, including the U.S., while employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be affected due to local labor regulations. In over a dozen other nations across Europe, Asia, and Africa, notifications are set to be distributed between February 11 and February 18.

Meta aims to reduce 5% of its workforce, specifically targeting the lowest-performing employees, as revealed in a memorandum from Meta's Head of People, Janelle Gale. In contrast to earlier rounds of layoffs, offices will remain operational on the day of the announcement, and additional details regarding the layoffs will not be disclosed.

Meanwhile, Meta is focusing on bolstering its engineering talent pool. VP of Engineering for Monetization, Peng Fan, mentioned plans to expedite the hiring process for machine learning engineers and other crucial engineering roles, with recruitment activities to occur between February 11 and March 13. This initiative is part of Meta's strategic alignment towards its 2025 priorities.
