Meta Platforms Inc. Announces Major Job Cuts in AI Strategy Shift

Meta Platforms Inc. has commenced a significant workforce reduction, marking the beginning of a process that will eliminate thousands of positions as the company steers towards harnessing artificial intelligence capabilities. According to a Bloomberg report, this move involves severance packages for US-based employees, comprising 16 weeks of pay alongside an additional two weeks for each year of service. Additionally, performance bonuses and stock awards remain unaffected for qualifying employees.

Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg disclosed that the downsizing targets 5% of Meta's workforce, potentially affecting up to 3,600 individuals, focusing primarily on those failing to meet performance expectations. Notifications of job termination were issued to the US employees on February 10, with international employees slated to receive news later.

The layoffs align with Meta's strategic reallocation of resources towards acquiring top-tier talent for its growing AI ambitions, which could see investments scaling into hundreds of billions of dollars over time. This restructuring follows several rounds of job eliminations in 2022 and 2023 aimed at improving operational efficiency.
