Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of tech giants such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has announced a significant organizational reshuffle, resulting in a 5% staff reduction through performance-based terminations. According to Bloomberg, the move is part of a broader strategy to enhance workforce efficiency by replacing low performers with new hires within the year.

As of September, Meta's workforce numbered approximately 72,000 individuals, suggesting that about 3,600 jobs will be affected. This round of cuts is consistent with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's previous announcement in 2023, which he termed the "year of efficiency," involving the elimination of 10,000 positions and now emphasizing performance cuts to ensure a stronger talent pool.

Meta has detailed its process, which includes notifying affected U.S. staff by February 10, with international notifications to follow. Severance packages are promised to be generous, adhering to historical precedents. This personnel adjustment aligns with Meta's ongoing endeavor to reinforce its core business sectors and invest in evolving technologies, such as artificial intelligence and smart wearable devices.

Despite these reductions, the company plans to onboard new personnel to balance its workforce by the end of this performance period, with an overall anticipated 10% decrease, factoring in previous attrition rates. These changes come amidst Meta's reevaluation of internal policies, including modifications to fact-checking and diversity endeavors, alongside adjustments to its conduct guidelines.
