Metlen Energy to Launch EU's First Gallium Production Line

Greece's Metlen Energy & Metals SA is set to transform the European Union's industrial landscape by pioneering the continent's first gallium production line amidst a backdrop of escalating trade tensions between global powers. According to Bloomberg, the company is investing approximately EUR296 million ($304 million) in this ambitious project, a strategic move spurred by China's recent decision to curb exports of this critical mineral to the United States.

Investment to Reduce EU's Dependence on Chinese Gallium

The initiative, integrated with Metlen's comprehensive bauxite mining and alumina processing operations in central Greece, comes at a pivotal time. IndexBox data highlights that China's dominance in the gallium market was nearly absolute, accounting for 98% of global production in 2023. With gallium's pivotal role in the manufacture of semiconductors and other advanced technologies, Western nations have been actively seeking ways to secure alternative supply chains.

Evangelos Mytilineos, Metlen's CEO and Chairman, stated that this investment will enable Europe to significantly reduce its reliance on gallium imports, bolstering both self-sufficiency and strategic autonomy in critical raw materials. Gallium's application in sectors such as integrated circuits for computing and telecommunications underscores its industrial importance.

Enhancing Production Capacities Across Raw Materials

The project anticipates not only an annual gallium production of 50 metric tons but also a significant increase in alumina output capacity by 46%, reaching 1,265,000 tons, and enhancing bauxite production to 865,000 tons. Together, these materials are integral to the EU's list of critical raw commodities, emphasizing the project's strategic significance.

The production, valued at approximately EUR1 billion, will serve markets across Europe and North America. Metlen targets a phased rollout starting with bauxite in 2026, followed by alumina and gallium, leading to full operational capacity by 2028. Recognized for its critical contribution to the EU's material self-sufficiency, the project has received the EU's sovereignty seal, affirming its role within the bloc's sustainability and economic resilience initiatives.

Additionally, the project aligns with the EU's Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework, a measure designed to support economic structures in light of geopolitical instabilities.
