MetLife Eyes Future Prospects in Private Credit through M&A

MetLife Inc. is contemplating strategic acquisitions within the private credit sector as part of its newly unveiled five-year plan, according to Chief Financial Officer John McCallion. This strategic direction was revealed during MetLife's annual investor day on Thursday, where McCallion discussed opportunities embedded in the company's existing footprint which can be further explored to leverage emerging trends in nonbank lending. MetLife's private credit operations, which span a diverse range of asset classes including infrastructure, private structured credit, residential credit, corporate private placements, and middle market private capital, have initiated approximately $117 billion in assets since 2019. This strategic focus aligns with broader industry patterns highlighted by data from the IndexBox platform indicating an anticipated growth in the global private credit market, driven by increased demand for nonbank lending solutions.

The company's CEO, Michel Khalaf, outlined an ambitious target to elevate adjusted return on equity to between 15% and 17%, while aiming for double-digit growth in adjusted earnings per share. MetLife also seeks to capitalize on the fragmented asset management landscape by integrating smaller entities to amplify its market scale.

Moreover, McCallion expressed optimism about future performance, especially in variable investment income sectors, which had been previously hampered by reduced returns in private equity. The revised strategic plan signifies MetLife's proactive outlook in navigating financial ecosystems and enhancing its valuations.
