MetLife Nears Acquisition of PineBridge Assets Outside China

MetLife Inc., a prominent US insurer, is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to acquire PineBridge Investments assets outside of China from Hong Kong billionaire Richard Li's Pacific Century Group. According to a Bloomberg report, the transaction could be officially announced soon.

The negotiations, while still private, indicate that the acquisition would value PineBridge's roughly $100 billion in assets under management (AUM) outside of China at approximately $1.3 billion to $1.4 billion. Notably, the deal would exclude a joint venture in China with Huatai Securities Co., which managed over $70 billion in assets as of June.

MetLife, potentially through its subsidiary MetLife Investment Management, which manages nearly $610 billion in AUM as of the end of September, emerged as the leading bidder, surpassing other financial entities. This move underscores MetLife's strategic focus on expanding its asset management portfolio, primarily in asset classes such as fixed income, private credit, and real estate. The anticipated acquisition aligns with MetLife's broader growth strategy, leveraging opportunities in global markets.

PineBridge, clients of which include pension plans, insurance firms, official institutions, private banks, and advisers, has seen considerable growth since being acquired by Pacific Century Group from American International Group Inc. for $500 million in 2010. This potential divestment marks a pivotal shift in PineBridge's operational strategy as it concentrates its resources within China.
