Price of Glass Fiber in Mexico Reaches Record High of $7,494 per Ton

Mexico Glass Fiber Import Price in April 2023

In April 2023, the glass fiber price stood at $7,494 per ton (CIF, Mexico), growing by 28% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 371% against the previous month. The import price peaked in April 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,519 per ton), while the price for China stood at $4,159 per ton.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.2%).

Mexico Glass Fiber Import Prices by Type

As there is only one major imported type of glass fiber, the average price level is determined by prices for glass fibres and glass wool.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for glass fibres and wool amounted to +7.9% per month.

Mexico Glass Fiber Imports

After two months of growth, overseas purchases of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers decreased by -22.2% to 3.4K tons in April 2023. Overall, imports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 344% month-to-month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 37K tons. From November 2022 to April 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass fiber imports contracted modestly to $25M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 with an increase of 29% against the previous month.

In April 2023, glass fibres and glass wool (3.4K tons) was the main type of glass fiber supplied to Mexico, accounting for a approximately 100% share of total imports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of glass fibres and glass wool amounted to -6.1%.

In value terms, glass fibres and glass wool ($25M) constituted the largest type of glass fiber supplied to Mexico.

In April 2023, the United States (2.2K tons) constituted the largest supplier of glass fiber to Mexico, with a 65% share of total imports. Moreover, glass fiber imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (1K tons), twofold.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -9.3%.

In value terms, the United States ($19M) constituted the largest supplier of glass fiber to Mexico, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($4.3M), with a 17% share of total imports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from the United States was relatively modest.
