Mexico Poultry Imports
In 2023, overseas purchases of poultry decreased by -0.2% to 871K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 105% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 893K tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, poultry imports declined to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. Imports peaked at $1.3B in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country
In 2023, the United States (712K tons) constituted the largest supplier of poultry to Mexico, with a 82% share of total imports. Moreover, poultry imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (154K tons), fivefold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States stood at -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+53.2% per year) and Chile (-12.0% per year).
In value terms, the United States ($852M) constituted the largest supplier of poultry to Mexico, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($343M), with a 28% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States totaled -3.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+52.3% per year) and Chile (-15.1% per year).
Imports by Type
In 2023, chicken meat (743K tons) constituted the largest type of poultry supplied to Mexico, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, chicken meat exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, turkey meat (127K tons), sixfold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of chicken meat imports stood at +1.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: turkey meat (-1.9% per year) and duck and goose meat (-14.6% per year).
In value terms, chicken meat ($948M) constituted the largest type of poultry supplied to Mexico, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by turkey meat ($259M), with a 21% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the poultry price amounted to $1,387 per ton (CIF, Mexico), falling by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 72% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $2,771 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($2,415 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,197 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-0.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
