Mexico Pumpkin Export Price in December 2022

In December 2022, the pumpkin price amounted to $1,105 per ton (FOB, Mexico), increasing by 34% against the previous month. Over the period from December 2021 to December 2022, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In December 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,105 per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan stood at $1,105 per ton.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+3.6%).

Mexico Pumpkin Exports

In December 2022, overseas shipments of pumpkin (squash and gourds) increased by 41% to 81K tons, rising for the third month in a row after four months of decline. Overall, exports showed a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 299% m-o-m. The exports peaked in December 2022.

In value terms, pumpkin exports soared to $89M (IndexBox estimates) in December 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 302% m-o-m. The exports peaked in December 2022.

Mexico Pumpkin Exports by Country

the United States (59K tons) was the main destination for pumpkin exports from Mexico, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, pumpkin exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (22K tons), threefold.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States was relatively modest.

In value terms, the United States ($65M) remains the key foreign market for pumpkin exports from Mexico, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($24M), with a 27% share of total exports.

From December 2021 to December 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to the United States totaled +4.4%.

Price of Pumpkins on the Rise Due to Supply and Demand Fluctuations and Climate Change Impact on Mexican Harvests

The main drivers of the price increase are the fluctuations in supply and demand and the impact of climate change on pumpkin crops. The year 2022 has been particularly challenging for Mexican pumpkin farmers, who have had to deal with unpredictable weather patterns, such as droughts and floods, that have adversely affected their harvests.

Additionally, the demand for pumpkins has been fluctuating wildly due to changing consumer preferences and the disruptions. These factors have made it challenging for farmers to meet the demand for pumpkins, leading to a spike in prices.
