Mexico Vegetable and Melon Exports

For the sixth consecutive year, Mexico recorded growth in shipments abroad of vegetables and melons, which increased by 0.3% to 7.9M tons in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +32.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, vegetable and melon exports rose rapidly to $9.3B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +82.5% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 14%. Exports by Country

the United States (7.8M tons) was the main destination for vegetable and melon exports from Mexico, accounting for a approx. 98% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to +3.9%.

In value terms, the United States ($9.2B) also remains the key foreign market for vegetables and melons exports from Mexico.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States stood at +6.2%.

Exports by Type

Tomatoes (2M tons), chilies and peppers (green) (1.1M tons) and fresh vegetables, nes (1M tons) were the main products of vegetable and melon exports from Mexico, with a combined 53% share of total exports. Cucumbers and gherkins, watermelons, onion and shallot, cauliflower and broccoli, lettuce and chicory, cabbage and other brassicas, carrots and turnips, melons, asparagus, eggplants (aubergines), green beans, spinach, garlic, peas (green), leeks and other alliaceous vegetables and potatoes lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for spinach (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, vegetables and melons with the largest exports in Mexico were tomatoes ($3B), chilies and peppers (green) ($1.6B) and fresh vegetables, nes ($935M), together comprising 60% of total exports. Cucumbers and gherkins, cauliflower and broccoli, onion and shallot, lettuce and chicory, watermelons, asparagus, cabbage and other brassicas, melons, carrots and turnips, green beans, spinach, eggplants (aubergines), garlic, peas (green), leeks and other alliaceous vegetables and potatoes lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Spinach, with a CAGR of +27.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2023, the vegetable and melon price stood at $1,178 per ton (FOB, Mexico), rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $1,273 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for the United States.

From 2013 to 2023, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the United States amounted to +2.2% per year.
