Mexico's Central Bank Poised for Interest Rate Cut Amid Cooling Inflation

In a significant monetary policy move, Mexico's central bank is anticipated to reduce its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points this week, bringing it down to 9.50%, according to a recent Reuters poll. This expected decision comes as Mexico experiences a slowdown in inflation and a slight contraction in economic growth towards the end of last year.

The Reuters poll showed that 14 out of 17 economists surveyed predict a 50-basis-point cut, following a series of five 25-basis-point cuts the previous year. The remaining three economists foresee a smaller cut of 25 basis points. This decision aligns with the central bank's previous actions in December when they unanimously voted to lower the benchmark rate to 10.00%.

Inflation rates in Mexico, which had surged to a two-decade high of over 8% in 2022, have now slowed to their lowest level since early 2021. The recent 12-month headline inflation reading was recorded at 3.69% during the first half of January, falling well within the bank's target range of 3% plus or minus one percentage point. This declining inflationary trend has emboldened Mexican central bankers to consider further rate cuts.

The prospect of a rate cut is further boosted by data highlighting a 0.6% contraction in Mexico's economy during the fourth quarter of the previous year, marking the first quarter-on-quarter decline in more than three years. Should the central bank opt for the anticipated 50-basis-point cut, the interest rate will reach its lowest since September 2022, drawing closer to U.S. borrowing costs after the Federal Reserve maintained its rate steady between 4.25%-4.50% last week.

The Bank of Mexico, commonly referred to as Banxico, is scheduled to announce its interest rate decision at 1 p.m. local time (1900 GMT) on Thursday, marking its first policy decision of the year. The financial community keenly awaits this announcement, which will significantly influence Mexico's economic trajectory.
