Mexico's Inflation at Lowest Since 2021, Sparks Potential Rate Cuts

Mexico's annual inflation rate in December has dropped to its lowest since early 2021, a development that suggests another interest rate cut may be on the cards for the central bank. Read more about how consumer prices rose by 4.21%, closely aligning with the 4.22% median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Despite this decrease, inflation still hovers above Banxico's target of 3%.

The IndexBox platform indicates that the decline in core inflation, which excludes volatile items like food and fuel, has nearly hit predictions, standing at 3.65% against a 3.64% median estimate. The central bank, known as Banxico, is expected to deliberate another rate cut when it holds its next meeting on February 6th, with members suggesting more substantial reductions could be on the table.

A potential 50 basis-point cut from the current rate of 10% was hinted at by Banxico Board member Jonathan Heath, who mentioned this possibility in a recent interview. Economic analyst Janneth Quiroz Zamora from Monex Casa de Bolsa anticipates such a reduction, emphasizing the guidance but noting it's not an indisputable commitment.

Additional economic challenges loom as former US President Donald Trump's proposal of a 25% tariff on Mexican imports could interfere with economic activities, potentially suppressing costs. Meanwhile, adjustments in exchange rates might drive prices upwards, muddling inflation's future path.

Regardless of US policy turmoil, Mexico's economy is expected to face challenges, with forecasts from a January Citi survey predicting GDP growth of just 1% by 2025. This sluggish expansion could further decelerate inflation, as highlighted by available data on IndexBox.
