Mexico's Inflation Slows, Prompting Speculation on Future Rate Cuts

In recent developments, Mexico's annual inflation rate has eased more than anticipated in early January, fueling expectations for a more substantial interest rate reduction by the central bank in the forthcoming policy meeting.According to Bloomberg, official figures released on Thursday reveal that consumer prices increased by 3.69% in the first half of the month compared to the previous year, slightly below the 3.72% median forecast by economists.

The report highlighted that core inflation, excluding volatile components such as food and fuel, registered a rate of 3.72%, marginally exceeding the projected 3.69%. The central bank of Mexico, known as Banxico, implemented a quarter-point reduction in the key rate for the fourth consecutive meeting in December, bringing it down to 10%. Policymakers have noted that further significant reductions could be on the table, although maintaining a cautious approach remains a priority.

Banxico's next policy meeting is slated for February 6, where discussions will likely revolve around the pace of potential rate cuts. In the most recent survey conducted by Citi, 17 out of 30 economists anticipate a quarter-point reduction to 9.75%, while the remaining foresee a more aggressive half-point cut to 9.5%.

The backdrop of economic uncertainty and external pressures such as tariff threats from the United States adds an extra layer of complexity to Banxico's decision-making process.
