View PricingMicron Technology's Market Surge and Future Prospects
Micron Technology shares surged on Monday, buoyed by a bullish note from a leading Wall Street analyst regarding the promising outlook of the memory chip market in advance of the company's quarterly earnings report scheduled for later in the week. For more details, you can read the full analysis here.
Micron has been trailing behind the Nasdaq in 2023, posting a rise of roughly 24%, whereas the benchmark has advanced by 32.7%. This lag is attributed to tepid pricing in the DRAM memory chip sector, which is pivotal for consumer tech products and makes up about a third of Micron's revenue. However, there is growing investor optimism about Micron's new strategic position in the HBM (high bandwidth memory) chip arena. These advanced chips are now integrated into Nvidia's H200 processors and the newly crafted Blackwell systems, marking Micron as a key player in this rapidly advancing market.
Earlier this month, Micron secured $6.1 billion in backing from the U.S. government's CHIPS and Science Act, facilitating its ambitious plan to pour approximately $125 billion into new manufacturing facilities in New York and Idaho. U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, "Leading-edge memory chips are foundational to all advanced technologies, and America is rebuilding its capacity to produce these critical capabilities for the first time in almost two decades."
As Micron prepares to announce its fiscal first quarter earnings, anticipated to occur after the market closes on Wednesday, the shadow of DRAM pricing challenges looms overhead, partly due to declining consumer demand. Market expectations are set for earnings of around $1.72 per share, with projected revenues soaring approximately 85% year-over-year to $8.72 billion. Micron's own forecasts align closely, predicting revenues near $8.7 billion, with a profit margin improvement of 3 percentage points to 39.5% driven by a growing portfolio of higher-priced HBM sales.
Notably, the total addressable market for HBM chips, also manufactured by South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, is projected to escalate from $4 billion in 2023 to roughly $25 billion by 2025. Citigroup analyst Christopher Danely, reiterating his buy rating and $150 price target, foresees Micron delivering "results and guidance slightly below Consensus driven by legacy DRAM weakness." He remains optimistic about a DRAM market recovery in the coming year.
In the context of the broader memory market, data from IndexBox reveals that the export value of memories from the United States was $1.9 billion in 2023, while the import value stood at $2 billion. The top five export destinations included Taiwan (Chinese) at $477.4 million, Mexico at $380.6 million, and Singapore at $345.6 million. Meanwhile, Taiwan (Chinese) also led as the top import source, contributing $724.7 million, followed by Malaysia and South Korea at $513.8 million and $235.6 million, respectively.
