Microsoft Launches AI and Cybersecurity Training Initiative in South Africa

In a significant move to boost technological capabilities in South Africa, Microsoft has announced its plan to train 1 million individuals in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity by 2026. The source detailed the announcement made by Lillian Barnard, President for Microsoft Africa, during Microsoft's "AI Tour" event in Johannesburg.

The national skilling initiative is set to cater to a diverse audience, with an emphasis on reaching various sectors including companies, government, and the youth. Barnard emphasized that "by providing skilling opportunities and access to industry-recognized certifications, our youth will be well positioned to compete on the global stage."

Microsoft's plan not only represents a major investment in the South African workforce but also reflects the company's ongoing commitment to the African continent. The tech giant, which was the first global "hyperscale" public cloud provider to establish data centers in South Africa, has already trained four million Africans over the past five years and is on track to train a total of 30 million over the next five years, according to data from the IndexBox platform.
