Microsoft Corp's substantial investment in artificial intelligence, amounting to tens of billions of dollars, faces critical evaluation as market analysts question the timeline for achieving tangible results. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft's stock has underperformed within the Magnificent Seven since the highs of July, hindered by hefty spending and sluggish adoption of AI services which have left the stock oversold given its high trading multiple.

Tim Pagliara of Capwealth Advisors notes the market's growing realization that the adoption of AI will unfold at a slower pace than many investors anticipated, rendering current expectations for immediacy in returns as overly ambitious. Microsoft's stock price is currently about 10% lower than its record peak in July, trailing the Nasdaq 100 Index's performance since the year began, reflecting investor scrutiny on Microsoft's enormous AI-related expenditure.

The state of these investments will become clearer with Microsoft's upcoming second-quarter results due later this month. With lukewarm forecasts for its Azure cloud-computing business in successive quarters, the slow adoption could obscure Microsoft's timeline for a return on investment. Competitive pressure from rivals such as Google Gemini and Meta AI, which enjoy wider consumer traction, compounds these challenges. Morgan Stanley analysts have interpreted Microsoft's latest rebranding efforts as a response to the modest uptake of their Microsoft 365 Copilot offering.

Despite current challenges, optimism persists among analysts, with over 90% of those tracked by Bloomberg advocating for buying Microsoft stock, predicting a nearly 20% price rise over the next year. With strong expected growth in revenue and earnings, Microsoft remains poised for success in the AI sector, though the pace may not align with initial expectations.
