Middle East's IPO Momentum Poised to Continue in 2025

The robust pace of initial public offerings (IPOs) in the Middle East during 2024 has set the stage for continued activity in 2025, despite recent debut stumbles raising valuation concerns. According to the source, companies have already secured a significant $13 billion from IPOs this year, marking the region's second-best outcome since the pandemic.

Some of the most notable IPOs, such as Talabat Holding PLC, OQ Exploration & Production SAOG, and Lulu Retail Holdings PLC, attracted considerable interest but had lackluster market openings. Analysts hint that late-stage upsizing in deals, like those of Lulu and Talabat, possibly resulted in oversupply, stirring investor caution.

Despite these challenges, Gulf governments remain committed to diversifying their economies and advancing capital markets, signaling that the rush of listings is far from over. Andrew Briscoe, Bank of America Corp.'s head of equity capital markets syndicate for EMEA, noted that while recent IPO performances have been mixed, issuance levels are likely to stay consistent, even if investor enthusiasm varies.

The United Arab Emirates is leading the charge in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region for listings for the third consecutive year. Flanked by Saudi Arabia, these nations also rank among the world's top venues for share sales. Outside the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Oman made significant strides, surpassing countries like the UK and Germany in IPO volume. The sultanate is primed for more with plans to privatize 30 more assets.

Upcoming potential IPOs include Etihad Airways in the UAE, as well as Flynas, Tabby, and Ejada in Saudi Arabia. EFG Hermes' Ali Khalpey predicts that Saudi Arabia will see the highest number of IPOs, driven by growth in both state-owned and private firms.

While the IPO buzz in the US and Europe offers global investors more options, the Middle East's growing presence in global indexes highlights the region's increasing allure. This year, international players like Vanguard Group Inc. and Singapore's GIC Pte showed interest in Lulu's IPO, while a substantial portion of Saudi Aramco's share sale went to foreign investors, a significant shift from its 2019 offering.

Investment opportunities in the region are anticipated to expand, with more follow-ons expected to meet index inclusion criteria and sustain investor interest. According to Samer Deghaili of HSBC Holdings Plc, companies aiming for follow-ons will need to present compelling growth narratives to lure investors into enhancing their stock portfolios.
