Mistral Sets Sights on AI Market with Major Updates to Le Chat Assistant

Mistral, often heralded as Europe's great hope in AI, has recently unveiled several significant updates to its AI assistant, Le Chat. According to reports, the company has launched a mobile app compatible with both iOS and Android devices, in addition to a major web interface overhaul.

Mistral continues to carve out its position as a credible alternative to major AI players such as OpenAI and Anthropic by developing its own large language models. The company's flagship models, like Mistral Large and the multimodal Pixtral Large, are available via API or through cloud partners such as Azure AI Studio, Amazon Bedrock, and Google's Vertex AI. Additionally, Mistral offers a suite of open-weight models under the Apache 2.0 license, making it a versatile choice for developers and enterprises alike.

Le Chat aims to directly compete with popular AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. The new mobile version seeks to secure a spot on users' home screens, offering a conversational interface where users can query Mistral's AI model and follow up with ease.

Over recent months, Le Chat has incorporated features such as web search with citations and the ability to generate images and edit text or code in a free-form canvas. The recent partnership with Agence France-Presse (AFP) ensures the AI provides grounded results with reliable sourcing, although the app currently lacks voice mode for those relying on speech input.

In its latest update, Mistral has introduced a Pro tier priced at $14.99 per month in the U.S. and EUR14.99 in Europe. This tier provides access to the “highest-performing model,” although specific details about the underlying AI have not been disclosed. Pro users also enjoy enhanced limits and data privacy by opting out of data sharing with Mistral, adopting a pay-or-consent model.

From a performance standpoint, Mistral claims that Le Chat outpaces its competitors by running on "the fastest inference engines on the planet," capable of processing up to 1,000 words per second. Its image generation prowess is attributed to the use of Black Forest Labs' Flux Ultra, further distinguishing it from rivals like ChatGPT and Grok.

A standout feature of Le Chat is its enterprise solution, allowing deployment in proprietary environments with custom models and interfaces. This capability is particularly appealing to sectors such as defense and banking that require on-premise AI solutions, a functionality not currently offered by ChatGPT Enterprise or Claude Enterprise.

In the highly competitive app market, Mistral faces a challenge as it seeks to draw AI enthusiasts to its new mobile app. As of now, competitors ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Google Gemini hold prominent spots among the top downloaded iPhone apps in the U.S.
