Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. (MUFG) shares climbed to a record high, buoyed by the Bank of Japan's shift towards increasing interest rates, as detailed in a report from Yahoo Finance. The stock rose by 2.5% to Y=1,969.5 ($12.7), marking the highest point since its listing in April 2001. The Bank of Japan's recent raise of its key policy rate to a 17-year high has spurred further investor confidence, with expectations that rates might hit 1% or more as early as next year.

Other banking institutions, including Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. and Mizuho Financial Group Inc., saw similar gains, with advancements of 2.2% and 2.8% respectively. A broader measure of banks on the Topix index added 2.2%. The upward trend is largely attributed to the increase in borrowing costs, a stark contrast to the country's previous decade of ultra-low rates. Japanese banks are capitalizing on higher lending incomes, further strengthened by strategies such as stock buybacks, with MUFG planning to repurchase shares worth up to Y=300 billion by the end of March.

The rise in profits also stems from unwinding cross-shareholdings and benefiting from a weaker yen, which enhances the value of international revenue streams—a key expansion area for Japanese banks.
