MobiKwik IPO Sees Remarkable Oversubscription

In a significant vote of confidence from investors, India's MobiKwik has completed a highly successful $67 million initial public offering (IPO), with orders surpassing the shares on offer by an astonishing 120 times, according to Reuters. This massive demand reflects bullish investor sentiment toward the fintech's potential in India's burgeoning online payments landscape.

The IPO collected bids for 1.4 billion shares collectively valued at approximately $4.7 billion, starkly outstripping the 11.9 million shares originally available, as recorded on the final day of the three-day subscription period. MobiKwik's offering is unparalleled since September during which the domestic stock market began a downward trajectory from peak values.

This overwhelming interest is being driven by India's booming fintech market, where substantial growth is anticipated. The transaction value for India's online payments market is projected to expand significantly, doubling from 265 trillion rupees in the fiscal year 2023-24 to 593 trillion rupees in 2028-29. Market leaders like Paytm, Walmart-backed PhonePe, and Google Pay continue to dominate the space.

Within this context, MobiKwik's IPO, solely comprising newly issued shares, saw the retail investor segment oversubscribed by 135 times, while institutional buyers, comprising foreign funds and mutual funds, submitted bids 120 times over their allocation. Analysts highlight that MobiKwik's stocks are trading at a 50% premium in the unregulated grey market, signaling potential gains once trading begins on December 18.

Strong Backing and Strategic Timing

MobiKwik had previously delayed its IPO plans following Paytm's underwhelming stock market entry in 2021. Now, aiming for a $256 million market valuation within a 265-279 rupees price range, this launch is buoyed by substantial backing from entities like Bajaj Finance and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), the largest sovereign wealth fund in the UAE.
