Morrisons' Christmas Sales Impacted by Cyber Attack

British supermarket chain Morrisons faced a significant setback during its crucial Christmas sales period due to a cyber attack on its technology provider, Blue Yonder, earlier in November. According to a report by Reuters, the cyber incident disrupted Morrisons' warehouse management system, leaving the retailer without crucial visibility on fresh and produce stock levels for several days.

Morrisons' CEO Rami Baitieh revealed the challenges faced due to this breakdown, expressing concerns over the impact on the supermarket's product availability. Despite these challenges, the company's finance chief, Jo Goff, mentioned that sales did grow in the first quarter ending in January, albeit at a slower rate than the 4.9% growth reported in the previous quarter.

This incident highlights the growing vulnerability of retail companies to cyber threats.
