Mosaic Sells Brazilian Phosphate Mine to Fosfatados Centro for $125 Million

US fertilizer giant Mosaic (NYSE: MOS) announced on Monday its agreement to sell its phosphate mine and tailings dams in Patos de Minas, Brazil, to Fosfatados Centro for a total cash consideration of $125 million. [Mining.com] The payment will be spread over six years, aligning with Mosaic's strategic objective of divesting non-core assets to focus on higher-return investments.

The decision comes amidst a market environment where global potash prices have begun to normalize following disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions. With sanctions on top producers Russia and Belarus being bypassed, the market is actively recovering via increased shipments to Asia and South America.

The operation in Brazil is significant given the country's import and export dynamics for natural calcium and aluminum phosphates. According to IndexBox data, Brazil's exports of these phosphates saw a value of $11.1 million in 2023. In stark contrast, import figures show a substantial value of $259.7 million, indicating Brazil's strong reliance on imported phosphate resources.
