The increased expenditure can be attributed to higher compensation costs and employee incentives, with MSCI's workforce expanding by 5.8% to 6,132 as of December 31.

The challenges of comparison with the prior year were heightened due to a one-time gain that MSCI logged in the fourth quarter of the previous year, linked to its investment in the private asset data analytics firm Burgiss Group. This had significantly boosted profits during that period, complicating year-on-year comparisons.
