Negative Equity on the Rise, Exacerbating Car Loan Woes

In a concerning trend for both consumers and auto dealers, the number of car owners with negative equity, meaning they owe more on their vehicles than they are worth, has increased significantly. According to data from car shopping website Edmunds, this figure rose to 24% by the end of 2024, up from 18.5% in 2023.

The IndexBox platform highlights that the average amount car owners are underwater on their loans has also seen a worrying upsurge, reaching an unprecedented $6,458. Alarmingly, over 20% of these owners owe more than $10,000 above their vehicle's value.

This situation traces its roots back to the pandemic-induced inventory crunch that sent car prices skyrocketing between 2021 and 2022. The lack of supply, coupled with high demand, led many dealers to inflate prices far beyond the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP). Industry analysts had warned that these price hikes would eventually lead to a market downturn once inventory levels stabilized.

As predicted, vehicle inventories have now rebounded, with most dealers holding over 75 days' worth of vehicles, exceeding the healthy benchmark of a 60-day supply. This surplus is driving prices down, which in turn affects trade-in values and leaves many owners with greater negative equity.

Jessica Caldwell, head of insights at Edmunds, expressed concern over the escalating trend, noting that both uncontrollable market factors and poor consumer financial decisions contribute to this situation. "Seeing such a notable share of individuals affected at the $10,000 or even $15,000 level is nothing short of alarming," Caldwell commented.

Dealers like Adam Lee of Lee Auto Mall in Maine find themselves in difficult positions, trying to assist customers grappling with negative equity while sometimes sacrificing potential profits. "We're doing the best we can now, if someone comes in with a decent trade, to give them as much money as we can," Lee stated.

Tom Santospago, equity partner overseeing Lee's operations, echoed these sentiments, describing scenarios where they encounter customers owing upwards of $15,000 more than their cars' value. "It's really sad," Santospago shared. "It definitely hurt the customers."
