Netflix Reports Record-Breaking Quarterly Results Amidst Surge in Shares
Netflix's shares soared to a new high in after-hours trading following an impressive fourth-quarter earnings report that exceeded market expectations. For more details, visit the original news report on Euronews.
The streaming giant saw its shares rise over 10% during extended hours, a testament to its strong financial performance and strategic initiatives. The fourth quarter witnessed Netflix adding a staggering 19 million new subscribers, doubling analyst estimates and bringing its total user base to 302 million globally. This surge was significantly fueled by its crackdown on password sharing, as well as live sports programming such as the much-anticipated match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, marking record-breaking user registrations.
Strategic Shifts and Financial Performance
This quarter marks the last time Netflix will report the number of subscriptions, as the company pivots towards measuring success through more traditional financial metrics including profit margin and revenue growth. Netflix credits its growth to a blend of popular content and special event programming, highlighting hits like Squid Game Season 2, Carry-On, and major live events such as the aforementioned fight, NFL games, and the Beyonce Bowl.
The company has strategically secured U.S. broadcasting rights for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031, further highlighting its emphasis on "can't-miss, special event programming."
Ad-Supported Tier and Future Outlook
The ad-supported tier emerged as a crucial element in Netflix's user growth strategy, contributing to 55% of new sign-ups in regions where ads are available and witnessing a near 30% sequential increase in membership. "A top priority in 2025 is to enhance our offering for advertisers, enabling substantial growth in advertising revenue," Netflix stated.
With total revenue climbing 16% year-on-year to $10.25 billion, surpassing expectations, and earnings per share doubling to $4.27 compared to $2.11 the previous year, Netflix has demonstrated robust financial health. Despite this, the operating margin fell to 22%, attributed to significant investments in live sports programming.
Regionally, the UCAN (U.S. and Canada) and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) markets stood out as major revenue contributors, with Netflix planning price adjustments in key markets including the U.S., Canada, Portugal, and Argentina to fuel reinvestment efforts.
Looking forward, Netflix anticipates revenue of $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion in 2025, indicating a growth rate of 12% to 14%. Moreover, it has raised its operating margin projection to 29% and expects free cash flow to reach $8 billion by 2025.
Remaining committed to its core entertainment offerings, Netflix plans to expand its portfolio with new series, films, and further development of live programming and gaming. With flagship shows like Squid Game, Wednesday, and Stranger Things set for return in 2025, Josh Gilbert, a market analyst at eToro, noted, "If Netflix continues to deliver a compelling content lineup, it will justify further price increases, ensuring its growth trajectory remains strong."
