Netherlands Biological Product Exports
In 2024, overseas shipments of biological products were finally on the rise to reach 11K tons for the first time since 2021, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 163%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 27K tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, biological product exports totaled $20.5B (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 323% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $21.9B in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2024, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
Germany (5K tons) was the main destination for biological product exports from the Netherlands, with a 45% share of total exports. Moreover, biological product exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (858 tons), sixfold. Italy (761 tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.8% share.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany stood at +24.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (+22.6% per year) and Italy (+28.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for biological product exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($3.6B), the United States ($2.2B) and Switzerland ($1.7B), with a combined 37% share of total exports. France, Italy, the UK and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +49.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2024, the biological product price amounted to $1,837,666 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), waning by -13.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 292% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,118,276 per ton in 2023, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($15,306,520 per ton), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($422,724 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+39.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
