Netherlands Butter Export Price in January 2023
In January 2023, the butter price stood at $6,663 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), standing approximately at the previous month. Over the period from January 2022 to January 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $6,756 per ton in December 2022, and then fell modestly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In January 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($9,303 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($5,701 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Butter Exports
In January 2023, after two months of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of butter, when their volume decreased by -1.1% to 26K tons. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the period from January 2022 to January 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 32% against the previous month.
In value terms, butter exports reduced slightly to $174M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from January 2022 to January 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +5.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2023 figures, exports increased by +40.1% against July 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 when exports increased by 31% m-o-m.
Netherlands Butter Exports by Country
Germany (11K tons), France (7.2K tons) and Belgium (2.5K tons) were the main destinations of butter exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 80% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Italy, the United States and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 8.7%.
From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +57.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for butter exported from the Netherlands were Germany ($76M), France ($47M) and Belgium ($17M), together comprising 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Spain, Italy and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 9%.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +56.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
