In 2023, shipments abroad of carrots and turnips increased by 6.8% to 478K tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 14%. The exports peaked at 503K tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carrot and turnip exports surged to $265M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
Germany (174K tons), Belgium (146K tons) and Poland (33K tons) were the main destinations of carrot and turnip exports from the Netherlands, together accounting for 74% of total exports. France, the Czech Republic, the UK, Spain and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($115M) remains the key foreign market for carrots and turnips exports from the Netherlands, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($56M), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 5.2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at +2.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-0.3% per year) and France (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the carrot and turnip price amounted to $554 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), growing by 37% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 37% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2023 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($873 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($323 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
