In 2023, shipments abroad of cheese increased by 7.2% to 1.1M tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2013 to 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, cheese exports expanded rapidly to $5.9B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, total exports indicated a notable increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by +72.3% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country
Germany (359K tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 32% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (126K tons), threefold. France (104K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +3.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+4.7% per year) and France (+2.7% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($1.9B) remains the key foreign market for cheese exports from the Netherlands, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($712M), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +2.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+4.7% per year) and France (+3.7% per year).
Exports by Type
Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (710K tons) was the largest type of cheese exported from the Netherlands, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed exceeded the volume of the second product type, cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (264K tons), threefold. Unripened or uncured cheese (123K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (+15.3% per year) and unripened or uncured cheese (+23.0% per year).
In value terms, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($4B) remains the largest type of cheese exported from the Netherlands, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered ($1.3B), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by unripened or uncured cheese, with an 8.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the value of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed exports was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (+15.2% per year) and unripened or uncured cheese (+19.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the cheese price amounted to $5,327 per ton, therefore (FOB, Netherlands), remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 16%. The export price peaked at $5,555 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,356 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($3,901 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
