Netherlands Cheese Export Price in March 2023
In March 2023, the cheese price amounted to $5,137 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), which is down by -3.5% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 4.3% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $5,695 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to March 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($7,476 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($3,658 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Cheese Export Prices by Type
Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was cheese, blue-veined (not grated, powdered or processed) ($10,523 per ton), while the average price for exports of fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($4,140 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: processed cheese (excluding grated or powdered) (+1.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Netherlands Cheese Exports
In March 2023, shipments abroad of cheese increased by 15% to 103K tons, rising for the second consecutive month after two months of decline. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% from March 2022 to March 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cheese exports totaled $531M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5% from March 2022 to March 2023; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 with an increase of 13% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $535M. From December 2022 to March 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Netherlands Cheese Exports by Type
Cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (65K tons) was the largest type of cheese exported from the Netherlands, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed exceeded the volume of the second product type, cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (25K tons), threefold. Fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (12K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (+2.4% per month) and fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (+3.0% per month).
In value terms, cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($360M) remains the largest type of cheese exported from the Netherlands, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered ($111M), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd, with a 9.5% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed totaled +1.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (+1.8% per month) and fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (+2.5% per month).
Netherlands Cheese Exports by Country
Germany (34K tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 33% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (13K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (9.3K tons), with a 9% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Belgium (+2.3% per month) and France (+0.6% per month).
In value terms, Germany ($173M) remains the key foreign market for cheese exports from the Netherlands, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($67M), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Germany amounted to +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Belgium (+2.0% per month) and France (+1.8% per month).
