Netherlands Container Imports
For the fifth consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in overseas purchases of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, which increased by 40% to 1.4B units in 2024. Over the period under review, imports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2024 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, container imports fell sharply to $631M (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $978M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
Germany (90M units), France (67M units) and Belgium (33M units) were the main suppliers of container imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 19% of total imports. Poland, Italy, China and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 4.1%.
From 2014 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +17.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($294M), Belgium ($187M) and France ($141M) were the largest container suppliers to the Netherlands, together comprising 64% of total imports.
Belgium, with a CAGR of +22.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, for any material (excluding compressed or liquefied gas), of iron or steel, capacity not exceeding 300l, whether or not lined or heat-insulated (1.3B units) was the main type of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers supplied to the Netherlands, with a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, for any material (excluding compressed or liquefied gas), of iron or steel, capacity not exceeding 300l, whether or not lined or heat-insulated exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes etc (including rigid, collapsible tubular containers), for materials other than compressed, liquefied gas, 300l capacity or less, lined, heat-insulated or not (105M units), more than tenfold.
From 2014 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, for any material (excluding compressed or liquefied gas), of iron or steel, capacity not exceeding 300l, whether or not lined or heat-insulated imports amounted to +23.4%.
In value terms, tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, for any material (excluding compressed or liquefied gas), of iron or steel, capacity not exceeding 300l, whether or not lined or heat-insulated ($330M) and aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes etc (including rigid, collapsible tubular containers), for materials other than compressed, liquefied gas, 300l capacity or less, lined, heat-insulated or not ($301M) constituted the most imported types of tanks, casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers in the Netherlands.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the container price stood at $996 per thousand units (CIF, Netherlands), waning by -33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $3.8 per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($6.6 per unit), while the price for France ($2.1 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
