Dutch Margarine and Shortening Prices Drop by 4%, Reaching An Average of $2,542 per Ton

Netherlands Margarine And Shortening Export Price in June 2023

In June 2023, the margarine and shortening price stood at $2,542 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), dropping by -4.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 8.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,651 per ton in May 2023, and then declined in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($3,656 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($1,754 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Margarine And Shortening Export Prices by Type

Average prices varied noticeably for the major types of exported product. In June 2023, the product with the highest price was liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($2,567 per ton), while the average price for exports of non-liquid margarine stood at $2,436 per ton.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: non-liquid margarine (+1.2%).

In June 2023, margarine and shortening exports from the Netherlands amounted to 29K tons, picking up by 6% on the previous month. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 22% against the previous month.

In value terms, margarine and shortening exports rose to $73M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 with an increase of 25% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $80M. From April 2023 to June 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats (23K tons) was the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from the Netherlands, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats exceeded the volume of the second product type, non-liquid margarine (5.5K tons), fourfold.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats was relatively modest.

In value terms, liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats ($60M) remains the largest type of margarine and shortening exported from the Netherlands, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by non-liquid margarine ($13M), with an 18% share of total exports.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of liquid margarine and edible mixtures of animal or vegetable fats was relatively modest.

Germany (7.7K tons), Poland (4K tons) and Belgium (2.8K tons) were the main destinations of margarine and shortening exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 50% share of total exports. Ghana, the UK, France, Russia, Spain, Denmark, Romania, Portugal, Italy and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in Romania (with a CAGR of +46.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($19M) remains the key foreign market for margarine and shortening exports from the Netherlands, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($8.2M), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.7% share.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Germany was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Poland (-3.4% per month) and Belgium (-2.8% per month).
