After four years of growth, overseas purchases of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments decreased by -19.3% to 56K tons in 2023. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at 70K tons in 2022, and then declined remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, organic pigments imports dropped to $550M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $644M in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country
India (13K tons), Germany (12K tons) and China (9.8K tons) were the main suppliers of organic pigments imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 62% of total imports. Belgium, France, the UK and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
