Netherlands Palm Kernel Oil Imports
For the fifth year in a row, the Netherlands recorded decline in overseas purchases of palm kernel and babassu oil, which decreased by -8.7% to 175K tons in 2023. Overall, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 270K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, palm kernel oil imports shrank rapidly to $220M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked at $373M in 2022, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country
Papua New Guinea (54K tons), Malaysia (33K tons) and Guatemala (29K tons) were the main suppliers of palm kernel oil imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 66% of total imports. Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, Honduras and Costa Rica lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Costa Rica (with a CAGR of +21.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Papua New Guinea ($63M), Malaysia ($43M) and Guatemala ($37M) constituted the largest palm kernel oil suppliers to the Netherlands, together accounting for 65% of total imports. Germany, Colombia, Indonesia, Costa Rica and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Costa Rica, with a CAGR of +26.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, crude, not chemically modified (149K tons) constituted the largest type of palm kernel and babassu oil supplied to the Netherlands, with a 85% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, crude, not chemically modified exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, other than crude, whether or not refined, but not chemically modified (26K tons), sixfold.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, crude, not chemically modified imports amounted to -1.1%.
In value terms, vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, crude, not chemically modified ($176M) constituted the largest type of palm kernel and babassu oil supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by vegetable oils; palm kernel or babassu oil and their fractions, other than crude, whether or not refined, but not chemically modified ($44M), with a 20% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the palm kernel oil price stood at $1,256 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), shrinking by -35.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 62%. The import price peaked at $1,945 per ton in 2022, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,559 per ton), while the price for Honduras ($1,025 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
