Netherlands Particle Board Imports
In 2023, imports of particle board into the Netherlands reached 2M cubic meters, increasing by 11% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2023 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, particle board imports declined to $380M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $422M. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
Belgium (750K cubic meters), Germany (494K cubic meters) and France (230K cubic meters) were the main suppliers of particle board imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Italy, Poland, the UK, Ireland and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +57.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest particle board suppliers to the Netherlands were Belgium ($114M), Germany ($111M) and France ($38M), together accounting for 69% of total imports. the UK, Austria, Poland, Italy and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +37.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In 2023, waferboards (5.6M cubic meters) was the main type of particle board supplied to the Netherlands, with a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, waferboards exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, oriented strandboard (OSB) (453K cubic meters), more than tenfold. Particle board and similar board of ligneous materials (excluding wood) (85K cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.4% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of waferboards imports stood at +23.3%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: oriented strandboard (OSB) (+20.3% per year) and particle board and similar board of ligneous materials (excluding wood) (-0.1% per year).
In value terms, waferboards ($272M) constituted the largest type of particle board supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by oriented strandboard (OSB) ($106M), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by particle board and similar board of ligneous materials (excluding wood), with a 5.8% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the particle board price amounted to $186 per cubic meter (CIF, Netherlands), with a decrease of -16.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 48% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $306 per cubic meter in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($225 per cubic meter), while the price for Italy ($65 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
