Netherlands Sees a Significant Reduction in Phenols Imports, Dropping to $411 Million in 2023

In 2023, the amount of phenols imported into the Netherlands dropped dramatically to 276K tons, declining by -32.3% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 542K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, phenols imports shrank sharply to $411M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, imports showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Belgium (113K tons), Germany (66K tons) and Saudi Arabia (35K tons) were the main suppliers of phenols imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 77% of total imports.

From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +281.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest phenols suppliers to the Netherlands were Belgium ($142M), Germany ($95M) and the United States ($43M), with a combined 68% share of total imports. Saudi Arabia, Austria, India, Jordan, China, Finland and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

Among the main suppliers, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +264.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

In 2023, monophenols (259K tons) was the main type of phenols supplied to the Netherlands, accounting for a 94% share of total imports. Moreover, monophenols exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts (8.9K tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by polyphenols and phenol-alcohols (3.2K tons), with a 1.2% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of the volume of monophenols imports totaled -6.4%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts (-10.3% per year) and polyphenols and phenol-alcohols (-2.8% per year).

In value terms, monophenols ($337M) constituted the largest type of phenols supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by polyphenols and phenol-alcohols ($30M), with a 7.4% share of total imports. It was followed by 4,4-isopropylidenediphenol (bisphenol a; diphenylolpropane) and its salts, with a 3.7% share.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the phenols price stood at $1,490 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), declining by -16.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2022 an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,775 per ton, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($4,578 per ton), while the price for Finland ($1,109 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
