In 2023, overseas purchases of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime decreased by -11.8% to 804K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at 1M tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, imports of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime expanded rapidly to $118M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2013 to 2023; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Belgium (392K tons), Germany (330K tons) and Norway (58K tons) were the main suppliers of imports of quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime to the Netherlands, together accounting for 97% of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +4.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, the largest quicklime, slaked lime and hydraulic lime suppliers to the Netherlands were Belgium ($59M), Germany ($48M) and Norway ($6.9M), with a combined 97% share of total imports.
