In 2023, the Netherlands Sees a Slight Decline in Rapeseed Oil Imports, Dropping to $1.2 Billion

Netherlands Rapeseed Oil Imports

Rapeseed oil imports into the Netherlands expanded notably to 1M tons in 2023, with an increase of 10% compared with the year before. Overall, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2023 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, rapeseed oil imports fell dramatically to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, imports enjoyed tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 50%. Imports by Country

In 2023, Germany (685K tons) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to the Netherlands, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, rapeseed oil imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (108K tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (94K tons), with a 9% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-2.5% per year) and France (+2.2% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($799M) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to the Netherlands, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($150M), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.8% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany amounted to +6.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-1.5% per year) and France (+2.4% per year).

Imports by Type

In 2023, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (544K tons) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to the Netherlands, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (251K tons), twofold. Vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (172K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude imports stood at +1.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (+5.2% per year) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (+58.9% per year).

In value terms, rapeseed oil with the largest imports in the Netherlands were vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($604M), vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($316M) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($212M), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country

In 2023, the rapeseed oil price amounted to $1,181 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), reducing by -24.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 44%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,563 per ton in 2022, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Belgium ($1,394 per ton) and Germany ($1,167 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($1,012 per ton) and Hungary ($1,063 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the UK (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
