Netherlands Rapeseed Oil Imports
In September 2023, approximately 82K tons of rapeseed oil were imported into the Netherlands; with a decrease of -25.9% compared with August 2023 figures. In general, total imports indicated noticeable growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, imports decreased by -25.9% against August 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in October 2022 when imports increased by 77% against the previous month.
In value terms, rapeseed oil imports dropped dramatically to $92M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 when imports increased by 58% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $144M. From November 2022 to September 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In September 2023, Germany (52K tons) constituted the largest rapeseed oil supplier to the Netherlands, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, rapeseed oil imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (12K tons), fourfold.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Germany amounted to +3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (+3.7% per month) and France (-8.5% per month).
In value terms, Germany ($56M) constituted the largest supplier of rapeseed oil to the Netherlands, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($16M), with a 17% share of total imports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (+2.6% per month) and France (-11.0% per month).
Imports by Type
In September 2023, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (53K tons) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to the Netherlands, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (17K tons), threefold. Vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (8K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.8% share.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude stood at +4.8%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified (+0.9% per month) and vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude (+3.5% per month).
In value terms, vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude ($55M) constituted the largest type of rapeseed oil supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by vegetable oils; low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, other than crude, but not chemically modified ($23M), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by vegetable oils; excluding low erucic acid rape or colza oil and its fractions, crude, with a 10% share.
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the rapeseed oil price amounted to $1,126 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), standing approximately at the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in July 2023 an increase of 7.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1,625 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to September 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the countries with the highest prices were France ($1,372 per ton) and Belgium ($1,356 per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($975 per ton) and Hungary ($1,020 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
