In September 2023, approximately 121K tons of solid biofuels were imported into the Netherlands; waning by -52.6% on August 2023 figures. In general, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 with an increase of 195% month-to-month.
In value terms, solid biofuel imports contracted rapidly to $32M (IndexBox estimates) in September 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2023 when imports increased by 124% month-to-month.

Imports by Country
In September 2023, the United States (23K tons) constituted the largest supplier of solid biofuel to the Netherlands, accounting for a 19% share of total imports. Moreover, solid biofuel imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (6.2K tons), fourfold.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from the United States totaled -14.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (-7.0% per month) and Malaysia (-45.2% per month).
In value terms, the United States ($7.4M) constituted the largest supplier of solid biofuel to the Netherlands, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($2.9M), with a 9% share of total imports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at -11.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.9% per month) and Malaysia (-36.9% per month).
Imports by Type
In September 2023, wood pellets (117K tons) was the main type of solid biofuel supplied to the Netherlands, with a 97% share of total imports. It was followed by wood charcoal (3.8K tons), with a 3.2% share of total imports.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of wood pellets amounted to -6.0%.
In value terms, wood pellets ($28M) constituted the largest type of solid biofuel supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by wood charcoal ($4.5M), with a 14% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In September 2023, the solid biofuel price stood at $269 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), with an increase of 24% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $301 per ton. From February 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,249 per ton), while the price for Latvia ($182 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
