Netherlands Spice Imports
In 2023, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of spices, when their volume decreased by -8.8% to 156K tons. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2013 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Imports peaked at 171K tons in 2022, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, spice imports totaled $532M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2013 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by -6.2% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $567M in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
China (35K tons), Peru (21K tons) and Brazil (19K tons) were the main suppliers of spice imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 48% share of total imports.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +39.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($83M), Brazil ($49M) and Vietnam ($44M) were the largest spice suppliers to the Netherlands, together accounting for 33% of total imports. Germany, Peru, Indonesia, Madagascar, India and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Peru, with a CAGR of +35.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports by Type
In 2023, ginger (81K tons) constituted the largest type of spices supplied to the Netherlands, with a 52% share of total imports. Moreover, ginger exceeded the figures recorded for the second-largest type, spices except pepper or ginger (32K tons), threefold. Piper pepper (12K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of the volume of ginger imports amounted to +8.1%. With regard to the other supplied products, the following average annual rates of growth were recorded: spices except pepper or ginger (+5.4% per year) and piper pepper (-2.4% per year).
In value terms, ginger ($182M) constituted the largest type of spices supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by spices except pepper or ginger ($90M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by piper pepper, with a 12% share.
Import Prices by Country
In 2023, the spice price amounted to $3,420 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), picking up by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $3,519 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($7,958 per ton), while the price for Peru ($1,892 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
