Netherlands' Export of Sulphates Decreases Dramatically to $107M by 2023
Netherlands Sulphates Exports
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of sulphates (excluding those of aluminium and barium) decreased by -25.8% to 136K tons in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 95%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 183K tons in 2022, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, sulphates exports contracted notably to $107M (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $155M in 2022, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country
Germany (54K tons) was the main destination for sulphates exports from the Netherlands, with a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphates exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (25K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (17K tons), with a 13% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+27.4% per year) and Belgium (+11.6% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($25M), Belgium ($16M) and Canada ($13M) were the largest markets for sulphates exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together accounting for 50% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +69.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the sulphates price amounted to $784 per ton (FOB, Netherlands), declining by -7.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 173% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,839 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($1,670 per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($393 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
