Tea Price in the Netherlands Slumps to $7,289 per Ton

Netherlands Tea Import Price in January 2023

In January 2023, the tea price stood at $7,289 per ton (CIF, Netherlands), which is down by -12.1% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated temperate growth from January 2022 to January 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.7% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on January 2023 figures, tea import price decreased by -0.5% against September 2022 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2022 when the average import price increased by 101% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9,450 per ton. From March 2022 to January 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($12,464 per ton), while the price for Kenya ($2,187 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Tea Import Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplied products. In January 2023, the product with the highest price was tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg ($12,538 per ton), while the price for tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg ($4,058 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg (+7.2%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Netherlands Tea Imports

Tea imports into the Netherlands soared to 1.7K tons in January 2023, jumping by 17% against December 2022 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 when imports increased by 61% m-o-m.

In value terms, tea imports stood at $12M (IndexBox estimates) in January 2023. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in August 2022 when imports increased by 28% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $15M. From September 2022 to January 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Netherlands Tea Imports by Type

Tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg (642 tons), tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg (619 tons) and tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg (202 tons) were the main products of tea imports to the Netherlands, together comprising 89% of total imports.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the biggest increases were in tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg (with a CAGR of +0.6%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg ($5.6M) constituted the largest type of tea supplied to the Netherlands, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by tea, black; (fermented) and partly fermented tea, in immediate packings of a content exceeding 3kg ($2.6M), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by tea, green; (not fermented), in immediate packings of a content not exceeding 3kg, with a 20% share.

Netherlands Tea Imports by Country

India (328 tons), Sri Lanka (283 tons) and Belgium (179 tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 48% share of total imports.

From January 2022 to January 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($2.1M), Poland ($1.9M) and Germany ($1.6M) appeared to be the largest tea suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 47% share of total imports. These countries were followed by India, Belgium, China, the UK, Kenya and Malawi, which together accounted for a further 35%.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +15.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
