Nissan Announces Production Cuts in U.S. Plants Amid Global Workforce Reduction Plans

Nissan Motor Corp., in a recent move to enhance its financial health, is making substantial production adjustments at its plants in the United States as reported by AP News. The Japanese automaker is set to slash its global production capacity by 20%, coinciding with a workforce reduction plan impacting approximately 9,000 jobs globally. This strategy comes as an effort to address challenges such as declining sales and increasing inventory levels.

In specific terms, Nissan's factory in Smyrna, Tennessee, will see one of its production lines reduce to a single shift while maintaining two shifts on another. This facility is known for manufacturing models such as the Murano, Pathfinder, and Rogue SUVs along with the Infiniti QX60 luxury vehicle. Concurrently, at the Canton plant in Mississippi, which assembles the Altima sedan and Frontier pickup, certain production lines will decelerate, and others may be merged.

The adjustments include gradual shift reductions at Nissan's Decherd plant in Tennessee, where the company produces car engines. These changes form part of Nissan's broader transformation agenda announced in November, aimed at achieving a leaner and more adaptable operational structure.

Amid these efforts, Nissan has also unveiled intentions to collaborate with fellow Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co. to establish a joint holding company by 2026. This partnership initiative, originally focused on electric vehicles, is anticipated to expand as both companies explore synergies.
