Nissan Calls Off Merger with Honda

Nissan Motor Co. has decided to withdraw from a proposed merger deal with Honda Motor Co., according to a report by Nikkei. Under the terms being negotiated, Honda would have absorbed Nissan, creating a single holding company by 2026. This development marks a significant setback for what could have been a monumental alliance in Japan's automotive sector.

The talks between the two companies lasted for a brief seven weeks before they stalled, failing to result in a consensus. News of the halted negotiations led to a temporary suspension of Nissan's shares by the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while Honda's shares saw an uptick of up to 12%, reflecting market sentiments about the dissolution. Nissan's shares, meanwhile, suffered a 6.4% decline, illustrating the potential impact on the company's market perception.

Both Honda and Nissan have yet to officially confirm the details of the report, stating that a framework for the proposed merger discussions would be released as previously scheduled in mid-February despite initial delays. The talks reportedly hit a snag when Honda proposed a complete acquisition of Nissan, a move met with resistance from Nissan's executive camp. Initially, when the merger talks surfaced in December, Honda appeared to possess a strategic advantage given its significantly higher market valuation, driven by its dominating presence in several key automotive markets.
