Nissan Plans Major Boost in Green Steel Usage in Japan by 2025

Nissan Motor, a leading automaker from Japan, has announced its ambitious plans to significantly amplify the use of green steel in its production operations in Japan by the end of the fiscal year 2025. The company aims to elevate the utilization of low-carbon steel fivefold compared to the levels of 2023, as outlined in a recent press release. This initiative is a core component of Nissan's broader strategy that aims to cut down carbon dioxide emissions across all phases of the vehicle lifecycle.

In line with its environmental goals, Nissan is setting a target to curtail CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. A crucial step towards these targets is the enhanced decarbonization of the material procurement process, recognizing that steel production traditionally contributes significantly to industrial CO2 emissions. By integrating technologies such as direct reduced iron with a low carbon footprint and electric arc furnaces, green steel can effectively reduce these emissions. Given that steel components constitute around 60% of a vehicle's weight, increasing the proportion of green steel is a pivotal strategy for Nissan.

Since 2023, Nissan has been at the forefront of the Japanese automotive industry's adoption of green steel, starting with Kobenable Steel from Kobe Steel. The company is now broadening its supplier base to include Nippon Steel's NSCarbolex Neutral, JFE Steel's JGreeX, and South Korea's Posco's Carbon Reduction Allocated Steel.

The global automotive industry is facing various challenges. According to EUROFER projections, car production in the European Union is anticipated to rise by 2.1% year-over-year in 2025 following an expected 8.4% decline in 2024. Major impediments to growth include weak demand, economic uncertainties, and delays in the development of infrastructure for electric vehicles. Furthermore, the dynamics in global markets, particularly in the US and China, along with intensified competition from Chinese electric car manufacturers, are poised to be decisive factors for European automakers.
