Nissan to Cut 9,000 Jobs as Profits Decline by 85%

Nissan Motor has revealed plans to slash 9,000 jobs and reduce its global production capacity by 20% as it struggles with unfavorable market conditions in China and the United States. According to CNBC, the automaker also sharply revised its annual profit outlook downwards by 70% to 150 billion yen ($975 million). This move marks its second downward revision after an earlier 17% cut this year.

Nissan's July-September second-quarter operating profit plummeted 85% to 32.9 billion yen, notably missing the LSEG consensus estimate of 66.8 billion yen. CEO Makoto Uchida stated, "Nissan will restructure its business to become leaner and more resilient, while also reorganizing management to respond quickly and flexibly to changes in the business environment." Uchida stressed that these measures should not be interpreted as a sign of the company's shrinkage.

The company's global sales contracted by 3.8% to 1.59 million vehicles in the first half of the financial year, with a significant 14.3% drop in China, underlining the challenges it faces in reviving its market presence against competitive local manufacturers. U.S. sales also saw nearly a 3% decrease, reaching approximately 449,000 vehicles. The U.S. and China collectively contribute to nearly half of Nissan's global sales volume.

Uchida noted that core models in the U.S. did not meet sales expectations and highlighted a surprising surge in demand for hybrids, a segment where Nissan needs a more robust lineup. Amidst growing foreign automaker woes in China, the fierce competition from agile Chinese firms in the thriving electric vehicle market continues to be a hurdle.

Passenger Car Export Landscape

According to IndexBox data, in 2023, Japan's export value for passenger cars reached USD 110.1 billion. The United States led as Japan's largest export destination with a value of USD 40.7 billion, followed by China at USD 10.1 billion, Australia at USD 8.2 billion, Canada at USD 3.9 billion, and Saudi Arabia at USD 3.3 billion.

Moreover, Honda Motor reported a surprising 15% drop in second-quarter operating profit due to declining sales in China, causing a 5% drop in shares of Japan's second-largest automaker. However, shares in Nissan saw a 2.2% rise prior to the earnings announcement, outperforming the wider market's decline of 0.25%.
